THE LATEST SUSPIRIA SETS A NEW, COMPLEX STANDARD FOR HORROR
Presented by Amazon Studios, Suspiria (2018), an Italian-American horror film, is a blend of supernatural apprehension and abstract imagery. Bluntly, this movie is everything you would not want in a fairy tale. Its overwhelming darkness slowly creeps into the plot and maintains a vividly strange environment in which the audience is saturated in fear. While the original 1977 film directed by Dario Argento remains a trailblazer of thrillers, director Luca Guadagnino’s new execution is wild and psychological to the end. |

THE TEMPORARY GIRL We aren’t vagrant, but five states, ten homes, and eight schools have not added up to stability. My mom and I moved frequently because my interim-father worked in the hospitality business. We followed him from Connecticut, to Nevada, to Florida, and around California. Thus beginning my life as a gypsy student The word “hospitality” kept me invulnerable, I just didn’t know it yet. To my peers I was virtually a blur, jetting from one coast to the next, concluding 9-month-old friendships to ignite new ones. With every relocation I lost a shirt or stuffed animal, but over time, those materialized and my chronic desire for consistency lingered. Time and time again I lost connection with my world. I learned to be the Temporary Girl. |
HIGH SCHOOL HIGHLIGHTER I am blindingly bright, not only because my defining component is physically synonymous with a traffic cone, but also because I am a ginger in a predominantly Middle-Eastern community, making it fairly easy to label me as an outcast. I used to be uncomfortable with strangers prodding their way through my sunscreen-infused personal space bubble to stroke my fiery mane. In sixth grade, I transcended into my phase of black, Crayola marker “hair dye”—the raw definition of punk. I questioned why the goldfish cracker meets cheap spray tan shade was so desirable. “You’re special,” mom would obviously say. “You’re rare.” The ginger gene comes from a recessive trait that each genetic disposer must have embedded in their coding, and voila, me. |

THE REPERCUSSIONS OF A FAILED FACADE A perfect life does not exist. Our exteriors are facades for the inevitable failure of human life. We call this failure due to the fallacy created by the concept of a Normative Timeline. We’re unable to be human without our blemishes. It’s impossible to be our perfect self, even at our best. We have the saying “I’m only human” but daily we punish ourselves and others on a case-by-case basis with judgement because of perceived flaws. |
THE PANCAKIFICATION OF MY INTELLIGENCE, ATTENTION, AND INFORMATION Because of the overuse and reliability that lies in the vital non-physical hands of data aggregators, my attention is hyper controlled. While I have the freedom to debate, research, and re-learn, I live with the constant reality that someone somewhere is telling me what to think, how to think, and most importantly why to believe something. There are very few sources that search engines collect data from. Factual, InfoGroup, Acxiom, and NeustarLocaleze. These aggregators control which data points get sent and sorted to search engines and other platforms. But, where are these answers coming from? What force is controlling what information goes where? |
